The El Dorado County Artists Studio Tour 2008 is coming up in less than two weeks! I have so much work to do and so little time to do it. I've been deciding what new works to include this year and am going to go with mostly my straight photographs that I have taken over the last several months (like the panorama shown above of A Clear Day at Red Lake that I took on the 4th of July).
It is always such a crap shoot to know what to display when you do one of these shows. The right person has to show up at the right time and you need to have the right picture displayed as they are walking by (lots of "rights" there!). As an artist, you cannot second-guess your customers—you just need to try and do and show your best work at all times; and, of course, show work that you really like too. I have found that trying to guess what will sell and what won't is almost an impossible task. You put your heart and soul (and dollars) into printing, matting and framing just hoping that this is the one that will sell well and that people will like.
Art is a very challenging pursuit. You want to do the work you want to do on the one hand, while on the other hand you really would like to sell work to enable you to do more work. It's sort of a "catch 22" when you think about it.
I love displaying my photography at Gold Country Artists Gallery and at great art shows like the Studio Tour and talking about it with people who are really interested. There is always some kind of story associated with one of my photographs. I can usually remember what the day was like around me when I was taking a particular shot and can almost just "go there" in my head and re-experience it.
Photographs are my way of remembering events and days in my life. When I do my annual Christmas letter to friends and family, I don't just write down the items—I go back through all my photographs from the year and use them as the basis to build the letter.
Off track, again...
Back to the Studio Tour... See, I start thinking about what I need to do for the Studio Tour and get sidetracked to all these other intrusive thoughts!
Stay tuned... I'll have more about the Studio Tour over the next few weeks.
